Greetings, UC Community!

Did you know that we have a laptop borrowing program for community members? Did you know that, throughout the year, we've been hosting open lab nights and digital literacy events open to ALL members of our community?

We *STILL* have laptops available to borrow for free through this program, and we are also running a couple of our technology events again in April, including one on SkillUpPA and how it can help individuals boost their credentials on their resumes and one tailored to helping parents/guardians navigate technology in the home. Check out the flier for details and reach out to Mrs. Dell, our Director of Curriculum and Special Programs, at sdell@ucasd.org to learn more or ask how you can reserve a laptop!

Note: This project was financed by a grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, under the administration of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority.

If you are a student in Grades 9-12 at UCASD and interested in careers in advanced manufacturing, robotics, CAD design, and more... you're going to want to check out this unique FREE summer learning opportunity at Gannon University provided EXCLUSIVELY to students from UCASD and Corry SD through a recently awarded Manufacturing Training-to-Career grant!

The FutureMakers Summer Camp is a hands-on, technology-driven educational program targeting high school students from rural communities, specifically the Corry Area and Union City School Districts. Hosted at Gannon University’s I-HACK facility, the camp immerses 20 students in an advanced manufacturing environment, blending theory and real-world application over four intensive days. Instruction will focus on additive manufacturing, CAD design, robotics, CNC and 2D fabrication tools. Students will also visit regional manufacturers which provides a tangible showcase of skills and learning outcomes. The camp is designed to introduce students to the breadth of opportunities in manufacturing careers and to build foundational technical skills. Activities include collaborative labs, drone flight sessions and professional mentoring. The program culminates in a fabrication tour fostering both technical competency and soft skills like teamwork and communication.

The camp, which is an overnight camp that includes boarding, transportation, and meals, is FREE and will take place at Gannon University from June 22-25, but registration is only open until June 15, and SEATS ARE LIMITED TO 20 students from UC and Corry. You must email makerspace@gannon.edu if interested in registering, so we are encouraging students to reach out to them ASAP if interested!

A special Thank You to Dr. Platz at the Corry Higher Education Council & Gannon University for including UC students in this grant application!

Welcome back from Spring Break, Bears!! As we head into the home stretch of the school year, we want to reshare our Statewide Assessment Calendar along with some helpful resources, information, and tips to support your child on this chapter of his/her learning journey. This information was also shared via email to all parents/guardians earlier this morning. Check it out!

WHY THESE ASSESSMENTS MATTER
The PSSA and Keystone exams give us a meaningful snapshot of how our students are growing as learners — and they help our teachers, administrators, and community understand where we're doing well and where we can continue to improve. These results inform the instructional decisions we make for your children every single day.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR STUDENT
Encourage a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast on testing days; we serve breakfast daily at UCASD!
Remind them to do their best — that's all we ever ask.
Keep the tone relaxed and positive at home; these assessments are a chance to shine, not something to worry about.
Make sure your student is present on their scheduled testing days if at all possible.

INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES
We also waned to share copies of some information provided annually by PDE that you may find helpful. In your email and on our website, you'll find copies of the following:
PDE Parent Letter Cell Phones and Electronic Devices 2026
PDE PSSA Spring 2026 Parent Letter FAQ
PDE Keystone Spring 2026 Parent Letter FAQ
PDE Calculator Policy 2026 - All students are provided with a handheld calculator during testing

For more information about our district's assessment program, including helpful resources from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, please visit our Student Assessment page at: https://www.ucasd.org/page/student-assessment. You can contact each of our School Assessment Coordinators directly via email as follows:
Mr. McMahan at the Elementary School (emcmahan@ucasd.org)
Mr. Anthony at the Middle School (janthony@ucasd.org)
Mrs. Conti at the High School (aconti@ucasd.org)
Mrs. Dell as the District Assessment Coordinator (sdell@ucasd.org)

We are so proud of our Bear students and the hard work they put in every day. These assessments are just one more chance for them to show what they know — and we know they're ready. Thank you for your support of our students!

Our elementary school proudly celebrated Mental Health Awareness Week with the theme “Practice Empathy with Kind Minds and Open Hearts.” Students participated in meaningful activities throughout the week, including Internet Wellness lessons during STEM with Ms. Hewitt, contributing positive messages to a collaborative mural outside the library, and enjoying a schoolwide Story Walk featuring I Choose to Calm My Anger by Elizabeth Estrada. The week was highlighted on Wednesday as students and staff wore green in support of mental health awareness, reinforcing the importance of kindness, empathy, and overall wellness within our school community.

This year's Mental Health Awareness Weeks theme was “Practice Empathy with Kind Minds and Open Hearts.” The week’s activities were designed to encourage self-awareness and foster understanding and support among peers.
Planned events included spirit days, lunchtime wellness activities that created chances for students to connect, and school-wide initiatives such as an empathy wall and a kindness chain. These activities aimed to build positive connections and strengthen the school’s supportive climate.

A special assembly for student during the day featuring the band ATTABOY took place on Wednesday, March 25.
Families were invited to attend a district Wellness Fair that same evening from 5:00–7:00 PM. The fair showcased local resources that support teen mental health and overall wellness. The evening concluded with a free ATTABOY concert, “The Overdrive Tour,”
